Hello,

New member here. I recently received a aerangis articulata orchid. It is a young plant mounted on a piece of board. I want to transplant it to something bigger and hopefully help it along in its' growth. I don't know what this type of orchid needs to be mounted on or in. I think I'm going to place it in my bathroom where it should get plenty of humidity from the shower and sunlight from the large western window. I could use some tips on growing this orchid and instructions on how to mount or plant it and the water/fertilizer requirements for it. Thank you.

Welcome Nate. You've come to the right place.

First of all, I wouldn't remount this plant yet. Not until it totally overgrows the wood it's on. All of my Angraecoides (like Aerangis) are in a humidity controlled wardian case (90-99% humidity) because that is what Angraecoides need. This one (the one you have) comes from Madagascar and the Comoro Islands off Africas east and west coasts (respectively). It tends to grow attached to tree limbs in a moist environment. What this means to you, is if you plan to bring this to flower you will need to keep humidity very high (the bathroom sounds excellent) and you might want to mist the whole plant (leaves and roots and mount) with pure water (not softened or tap water) in addition to the shower steam. The bright window sounds fine. I would also plan on getting some fertilizer and mixing it very weak. Check this site for instructions: Fertilizer PPM Calculator

I water all my Angraecoids with water and fertilizer every other day. They are misted with pure RO water every 4 hours for 5 seconds. You might not need that, especially if you take your plant into the shower with you in the morning. Don't forget to place it back in the window, though

Great information. You mentioned you water yours every other day and then mist every 4 hours. How do you water it? I've just been misting it due to it being attached to the wood. Also some of the roots are just floating out in the air. Anything I should do with them?

I'll attach a picture of mine. Maybe more can be explained with a picture.



I also noticed one of the leaves is starting to roll. Is that an issue?

I can't help with your Aerangis articulata any more than Ross has...in fact I can't even help that much... ...but I did want to say hello.

I've tried to respond three times and got switched to some other program every time. Here is number 4:

I grow mine in very high humidity in an acrylic "tank". Having that as a background, I find the curling of the leaves disturbing. That shouldn't happen. Here is another Angraecoid in bloom to show you what they should be like:

The leaves of this one have suffered some in the past and look really nice today. Rolling of yours is an issue. It isn't normal for Angraecoides to have the leaves shrivel or roll. They should be full flat out. I'm thinking, humidity is your issue.

Don't know on humidity for sure, but could be the problem. They really like high humidity. I water by taking the mounts out of the tank and spraying heavily (to soak them) by hand with a spray bottle. I use a weak fertilizer solution to do this and carefully inspect the mounts for mold, etc.
