I don't do it intentionally. some of them produce these upright leaves that are super stiff so when i am moving them around to clean once in a while a leaf bumps into something heavier than it can push around and pop, no more leaf, I find it really odd but the plants are healthy and keep on going so i just let them do whatever, I have a couple like the one you describe with twelve leaves and one with twenty, it has roots coming from every leaf node so it looks really scary kind of like some freaky orchid octopus.
