Default How do I identify...

Hello all!
Thanks for taking the time to read my meager little post!! I am a relative beginner, and though in the last 8 months, I am having much success, I do have some questions... As I browse the forums here, I see these lists of 'chids you all have... Some of mine, I know, as they came with an identifying label... Others, I am not sure... I know I have a purple phal, and a green and white paph, but what are they??? I grow most of my 'chids in a "hydroponic" set-up, and those seem to be ok... I just added a giant (to me) vanda, and I am in the dark with that one.. I have new photos which i need to upload, perhaps those would help
also, i am nervous being that winter is coming here in nyc... i want to make sure that the 'chids are warm and cozy... tips???
i am not sure which forums to post in as yet, and i have only been on the site a handful of times, though i did speak to some awesome people... i know someone can help me!
anyway, thanks!!!

Tips? Well, depending how cold it gets where you live, be sure your chids are not in the way of a draft. Also, I never allow my chids to touch on windowpane glass during cold temps. Make sure you have a fan going during the winter with closed conditions to keep air movements for them. Use humidity trays and try to keep the humidity up. That's all I can think of for now, but many will have more tips for you, I'm sure. Oh, and be sure to figure out how to post pictures so we can all survive the winter blahs by enjoying each other's blooms!
Don't panic, though, as orchids are pretty strong and survive nicely on windowsills.

Nice collection Cara!

Pic 1 could be Phal. Taida Salu. Here's a pic of mine for reference

Pic 2 is an Oncidium of some sort.
Pic 3 is a harlequin Phal.
Pic 4 can't tell
Pic 5 Looks like Oncidium Sharry Baby. If it smells like chocolate then you can safely label it.

I'm no vanda expert. They hate me. They require daily watering, very high light (direct sun is fine). I'm sure others with better vanda experience will weigh in here.

Hi, Cara! In Brooklyn here. Of course, my apartment has heat – steam radiators – but I've found that in the winter, something that is not only helpful for my 'chids, but makes me feel better too, is a warm vapor humidifier. Helps keep the humidity up and adds a little more warmth too.

BTW, welcome to the OB!
