That's my tendency as well. I did not rest my D. senile (Hairy) last winter as I was after a larger plant. I plan to put him to bed After Halloween along with anosmum. My anosmum has already started dropping some leaves like Gin's. I still keep watering up till Halloween trying to eek out the last mm growth This year looks like a plus 2" over last year. Hairy has at least 10 new growths all fuzzy and green . I'm hoping for a blossom or two next spring.

That's only the portion that I have managed to confirm dry season rest. My db is based on a checklist of Vietnamese plants, which is a monsoonal country in the lower elevations, so I suspect that a large percentage of the plants are adapted to a dry season. There's over 900 plants in my db. For instance, a lot of the Vietnamese paphs are used to a dry season, but they're probably located near streams and higher up the mountains, so they get mists and higher local humidity.

I think... the only orchid I have that does winter rest is:

Dendrobium Phoenix (nobile)

I only got it in May, and the man I bought it from said it went to sleep in the winter (he was very Chinese), but... it's got about half a dozen new canes, all about an inch to two inches long..... Do I still rest it?

I have one Brassia and about 6 nobile hybrids that I keep to the side in high light but no water and especially no fertiliser.

Aside from this I don't have any others that need a complete rest. There must be more though.

Well, I grow cattleya almost exclusively. I have a few phals and a couple of vanda's and the like but nothing like what ya'll have to worry about.

I do have several species catts some grown and some babies and teenagers. I need to look up the winter needs for these girls.

Can I ask why you rest Den Kingianum during winter? What conditions do you grow in?

;-)

All of mine to a lesser or bigger degree, get a rest from the water/fertilizer intake than what they receive in the warmer months.

Dends that were getting watered every 5 or so days in summer, get watered every 10-14 days in winter - no fertilizer. Same with Phals, from every 5-7 days in summer to about 8-10 days in winter and so on for the rest except Toulminias (Hi Ramon . Everyone here has repeated my sentiments about these being exluded, already), every 5-7 days, continuously throughout the year (in charcoal and a little bark).

My winter rest will begin later than others who are living in colder climate. I'm letting the weather here, dictate when to stop, probably around mid November for:

Dend. anosmum
Dend. parishii
Dend. Oriental Smiles (nobile)
Dend. Upin King "Serenade" (nobile)
(all fertilizing was stopped in late August for the above)

Catasetum - 2 of which are growing now so their leaves will tell me when to stop. One is already resting.
Ctsm. imperiale x Ctsm. (Thinger Dinger x expansum)
(2) Cls. warseewieczil x Ctsm. expansum

I know this topic is strictly for winter rest but I'm curious to know about this "hairy" orchid mentioned and also, Barkeria.
