I have small limestone rock as the floor over the heavy landscape cloth. The rock does not move when I walk on it, is great to create extra humidity when needed and is easy to keep clean IF you do it on a regular basis. Around here it is the unwritten rule, pick it up if it falls.

Gravel does work with increasing humidity as well as keeping it cleaner. I think it helps with weeds as well.

A number of growers here use it but of course barefoot wouldn't be so good. Another alternative is bark chips, like people use for mulching on garden beds. It also keeps the humidity up and slowly breaks down but looks clean and seems to work well.
