Pots Full of Holes? Male
Question Pots Full of Holes?

I have seen many plant pots with holes in the sides as well as in the bottom of the pot. Are you guys buying them like this or are you drilling these holes by yourselves????

I have never seen these sold.
Thanks....Faz.

You can purchase them with the hole in the bottom and slits in the sides, or you can drill your own. I have never drilled my own in clay, so I forget the name of the drill bit to use. Hopefully someone who knows can tell you because I remember someone pointing out that most drill bits will just chip away at or shatter the pot instead of making a nice little hole. Personally, I just buy them though.

I drill my own, usually. As I want more holes than given.

I make slots with a Dremil tool as well as holes. The more air the better. Can't have too much air - that's what I say.

Faz,
Just go to a hardware store and ask for a masonry drill bit. Just tell them you have some clay pots that you want to drill holes in.

Yep masonry bits work great---get a few...it's easier than having to go back out if one breaks.

If you're working through glaze, be sure to use something to grind down the glaze a bit. My fiance uses a dremel to grind/sand the glaze and then the masonry bit to drill the hole. Be sure to clean up any shards of glaze that might chip off (as they're sharp like glass)

The pot will get pretty hot and can burn you---as can the bit. Having the pot on the floor is suggested so you don't hurt yourself. Also wear safety glasses or goggles because bits of clay or glaze can fly up and hit you in the eye---try and use a bit that's length is shorter than your pot.

Hi Neighbour

I can safely say that all those plastic pots with holes you see in the Vancouver area are all hand-made. Terracotta pots, on the other hand, can be bought with slits on the side.

I like to soak the pots for a while before I drill them. It cuts down on the clay dust and seems to make the drilling easier.

HAHA! Good idea! I'll have to try that. Perhaps a blast or two with a shotgun loaded with something heavy would work good. What a conversation piece!
