Welcome to the European Community and the most amazing Flower-Mass-Production Industry ever: The Netherlands!
I must admit, it is amazing what this guys have achieved with the flowers/plants production...
Appart of all the ethical issues and/or orchidiots feeling (this discussion could be part of another topic ), they have managed that almost everybody can buy and enjoy orchids at home... and also given the first kick to many of us to start this fascinating hobby

I agree with Ramon, it's the dear old Netherlands giving us all these cheapo phals! During a visit of a Dutch mass production greenhouse 2 years ago I remember them saying that a phal costs much less than 1€ to produce They have mega 10 hectare greenhouses with orchids growing on 3 levels, minimal employees because of high mechanization(robots do absolutely everything, the people are just there to run the machines). It's mind boggling. Too bad I don't have pics!
I just saw a new load at the supermarket today, also at 2,99€! I might go back tomorrow, there are some nice perloric purple phals....

Although my icon says USA, I live in Germany (affiliated with the US Army). I think my MIL gets her phals on the clearance rack when they are in full bloom -- probably right before we visit!

In the last few weeks (since I've been a member of the OB, and now know what to look for), I've been looking at these big box stores for orchids, and from the hundreds I've seen, I have only seen one plant with a legitimate tag. Most of them say 'orchid Hybrid,' or 'orchid with two stems,' or some such. I think a plant with a tag from a reputable orchid grower probably will cost me.

That seems the same in the UK (although I've not seen them quite as cheep). You can buy cheep orchids all over the place in all sorts of stores, but I have never seen one with a proper name tag. Phals tend to just be labled as 'phalanopsis one stem' or phalanopsis two stem', some others have a similar standard of labelling (for example my summer purchase of a 'dendrobium one stem') but some are even worse, just called 'Orchidee'.

sinc ethese plants are meant for being sold as long-lasting-flowers, and then go to the bin (yes, sad, but true) nobody really cares about the correct tagging. Most people just wantto know it's an orchid and some o so far to know Phal or Dendro or ladyslipper. More or less, one tag fits all... they are distributed all over europe, and the prices varies according to country (e.g., buying on of them in Spain would cost even more than buying a correctly labelled Phalaenopsis at a good nursery in Germany)
However, and here the trick. Since these mass production nurseries specialize themselves in just few hybrids (this helps to keep prices low too), sometimes you can go to their websites and see which hybrids they have in their catalogues (does not help always!), as tehy tend to have them idetified there.
