Arrrggghhhh...What is happening.... Female
Unhappy Arrrggghhhh...What is happening....

Yeeeaarrgghh! All a sudden my girls are showing signs of bad things going on! I live in the mountains of N.C and stopped using the filtered tap water (I use just a 3 stage PUR on the kitchen sink, water is horrible here) and started using bottled distilled water. Once per week, inspecting carefully, giving everybody lots of attention and today! woah! found one with dark brown spots on a root! Yah!
Another with dying leaves (Wahaaa!!!). This one was a little tiny plant I was so proud of...she was surviving Walmart....oh dear.
What's best? Tap water? Could these problems be the distilled water? I'm very diligent in watering carefully and watching how they respond. What have I missed???

HELP!!! My girls are not happy!!!

Thank you
NeoOrchid

Have you been fertilizing and if so, is it possible that you may have been using too much at once and/or too often? Fertilizers, especially when you're not flushing or, in too high dosages, can and does cause roots to fail.

Hello NeoOrchid, I am new to Neo's and I have a question for you what are your Neo's potted in? Right now my new one is in moss (Japanese style) and I am not to happy with that setup and the way it looks.

Thanks In Advance
Sheridan

From what I recall, purified water still has trace minerals and whatnot in the water, which if your plants are use to, or need then that could be the reason for their upset.

I use purified PUR water---

try decholorinating it.. like filling a bucket of water and let it stand there for 24 hours... i sometimes drop charcoal in my water so as to remove toxins. if your orchids are back in shape... try using root hormone. use it weakly. promote root growth thus better nutrient absorbtion.

Hello, Neo! Welcome to orchid board. Be sure to post some pictures of your problem plants. Everyone here loves to help. I see you are from Black Mountain. What a great little town! My daughters went to Camp Crestridge for many years, so I have visited there a few times. Be sure to post those pictures so we can help you.

If you are using distilled water, yet are using the same fertilizer you had been using with your "regular" water supply, it is likely that the pH is dangerously low.

Most water is pretty well loaded with minerals, so is buffered by them, and the types of chemicals used in the fertilizer - actually the balance between nitrates and ammoniacal-based minerals - makes little difference on the solution pH, so they simply go as cheaply as possible. Use a water supply without those dissolved minerals - distilled, RO, deionized, collected rainwater, etc. - and there is no buffering action, and the pH will change drastically depending upon the chemicals added. Pure, degassed water, for example, has a pH of 7, but even absorbing a minuscule amount of carbon dioxide from the air drops it to about 5 (it is a very weak acid, though).

You basically have three options:
  1. Go back to your tap water and use the fertilizer you have.
  2. Use that fertilizer with the distilled water, but adjust the pH upward to the mid-5's to mid-6's range.
  3. Switch to a fertilizer designed for use with pure water.
Some will tell you to mix some of your tap water with the RO in an attempt to reintroduce the buffering minerals, but I don't see how you can know how much to add.

If you have not been feeding them at all, you are most certainly starving the plants, and the pH issues can still arise through the interaction with residues in the medium.

Neo, Welcome. You're getting some good tips, I just wanted to add one thing. Sometimes there is a big difference between "bottled water" and distilled water. Some bottlers purify the water via reverse osmosis, but then add back certain salts/minerals for flavor. Spring water can be the same. Distilled or RO water should be pure. Just check the labels to be sure.
