I have some orchidspecies from Southern America, and some of them starts their growing season now - like Stanophea wardii, a couple of Gongoras, P. bessae. At the moment they all are in a south- or east-facing window. I know that Stanophea and Gongoras like to be kept in shade. The bessae has been kept in the same window for a year. It flowers one month later than last year, but doesn't seem to sulk. But I don't have that much experience with these species, so now i wonder if I have to give them some extra light through their growing periode.

From what I have read (translating pages) Stanophea love medium temps and light...and should be potted in baskets. There is not much info on this species but they do not like to dry out and love reasonable humidity. From my reading they grow flowerspikes out the holes of a basket/pot??? would love to see a full of this one.

What do you think I should do with these orchids now when the light is low up here in north? I don't know if I should put them under extra light or not. Seems like the new growths grow very slow. I give them more fertilizer than the rest of the plants.
I have a couple of Coelogynes and a Cattleya percivaliana which also have started to grow new bulbs now. Don't know why.

I use quite a bit of fluorescent lighting. Most of my plants get about 12 hours/day. Cattleyas and related get as much light as I can give them WITHOUT extending the daylight. (If you extend it, they might not bloom)
