How to care for orchids in bloom

I just purchased orchids at the show and now I have them in an east facing window and run the ceiling fan daily. do I need to additional light for the orchids. I want the blooms to last as long as possible. They are in the onc family... I have another post with the orchids...

No doubt you had a gr8 time at the show.....wish I could have gone, too. Gotta save my , though (as I told you). Anyway, somehow I overlooked your post with pictures. I would love to see what you bought.

if they are in bloom you want to give them reduced light and temps to preserve the flowers on the plants as long as possible. With oncidiums I find they last the longest when they are given half the amount of light needed for growth and temperatures under eighty. provide gentle air movement with good humidity but not too much of either as air can cause drying while humidity and cooler temps can cause fungal infections on the flowers as well as leaves. any pictures of whats new.

Very nice paph.. i like the Dgmra. too. did you buy the twinkle on purpose or were you tricked into thinking it was fragrant. hehehe

I find that Twinkle is a very very over powering plant with a fragrance similar to cloves and ginger, if you were to snort them, especially in a warm bright enviorment. I dont know if you like that sort of thing but keep it somewhere where the smell wont make you vomit. Who is the red/orange?

Very nice selection of plants, i like them all except twinkle. Really i mean watch out you just dont know what kind of evil you are growing there.

My 'twinkle' has just started its bloom cycle and although I generally don't like strong fragrances, the sugar/spice odor is quite pleasant and not nearly as overwhelming as you might imply. There is a gentle fragrance in the room and only if right up against the plant in the morning do you get full strength...kind of like being in a pastry shop.

I'd stick the Bllre Peggy Ruth out in the sun (well dappled sun, maybe, till she gets used to full sun). The others can sit in strong light out of sun. Mine is in full sun all the time (behind a window screen.) I realize my "full sun" is not your "full sun"

Maybe your twinkle is a less horrible clone, I had one that i got from a show in San Francisco with twenty little spikes and I figured it would be able to add some fragrance to my room since the mother plant on display held only a slight scent being indoors in the dark show room, After taking it home I put it under the grow lights and the day it bloomed it smelled like a pastry shop blew up in my poor little room. It was horrible, the smell lingered for a week after i kicked the plant outside. I gave it to a freing who entered it in our societies show and during the afternoon hours when the heat was up and the light was bright I couldnt walk down the oncidium aisle without wanting to vomit from the stench. Good luck with your though they are charmers, especially when they have fourty spikes on a plant sitting in a three inch pot, but a little too 'fragrant' for me.

The pink orange one is onc honolulu 'van lnger' X oda. Arlington "Easton'

I was not aware of the smelly one. But it is out in the orchid room now. It is in spike. Actually, I cant wait to see it bloom. The others are in the house so we can enjoy their blooms. Thanks for the info guys. Your help is great.
