dendrobium cane

Hi,
Is the black area on my Dendrobium cane a problem or am I just over-reacting? I've began to wonder if it's a fungus ???
I would appreciate anyone's advice.

Hi Vicki. It looks like a drying sheath to me. Just carefuly peel it off to make sure, but I think you are fine.

I tried to after you advised me to, but it is firmly attached and doesn't seem to want to pull off. ??? What do you think I should do???

Vicki, since it is only on that one cane, I'd leave it alone. Just keep an eye out to see if it spreads, and try to keep splashes of water off it, just to be safe.

Try wetting the sheath before peeling it off.

Hi,
I tried wetting it, but it's still the same....won't budge (seems as though I'm "scratching-raw-cane". Does that make any sense at all???). I know almost nothing about sheaths, but I looked even closer this time....is there a chance that what I'm seeing is actually the part of the cane underneath a sheath that has already came off? (pictures attached) . Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about, so please correct me?! (There's a VERY good chance that is the case....that I am totally wrong)

Will you please let me know?

Vicki, I'd just leave it be, and keep an eye on it, like I mentioned. It's a fairly old cane, and as long as that spot stays put, you'll be fine, and may even save a finger nail, or two. These guys are tougher than we sometimes give them credit for.

Thanks so much for your help! That's just what I'm gonna do...keep an eye on it to be sure the black spot doesn't move. Of course, I really hope it doesn't, but in case it does, I'll scream bloody murder...so I hope you and others will please come to my aid, if that's the case.(very sad, though)
