how much humidity does a dish with pebbles add to the air?

haha, thats a loaded question. if i set my humidity gauge directly on the pebbles then it increases it by about 5-7%. if i set the guage on an upside down pot at the plants level then you may see an increase of about 0 from the rest of the air in the room. the reason being humid air is more dense and tends to 'spill' over the egde of the pebble tray and fall to the floor not doing any of the plants on the try any good. depending on how much your trying to increase the humidity around a plant or plants try using a cool mist humidifier, keeping the plant in the bathroom, or placing it in an aquarium with side walls that are as high or higher than the plant so the humid are is trapped around it. i do this with seedlings out of a compot, i use a large pot with no drain holes, add some stone and water to the bottom and set the little seedling pots down inside of it.

Paul is probably correct and humidity devises depending on evaporation probably borders on witcraft, that said, in my set up, the plant do very well using such devises. (perhaps the incantations I do every night help as well!)

After reconsidering your particular situation in the dry desert, if you could get a humidifier you would be better off.

As Ray (FrirstRays.com) has pointed out copious times in posts here, misting and/or pebble trays do nothing, notta, zero, zip for raising air humidity around the plants. My measurements confirm this. I provide what I am able (30% range in winter and 60% range in summer) and I successfully grow lots of humidity lovers (Paphs, Phals, Masdies, Sederia japanica, etc.) There are only a few (like the Aengraecoides) that will not tolerate dry air.
