boy o boy i need some help here i have bad issues with watering this plant. my zygopetalum lot of leave went yellow and them went brun , i have water at first once a week
them i have purchase a digital scale to weigh the pot .i have notice i need to water 2 a week ,but i never spray the leave whit water , maybe i going all wrong about it, maybe i should water more the leave than the pot,
Im having a bit of trouble with mine-
Do not spray the leaves, zygos from what I've read do not like water on them and will cause spotting on the leaves.
You may need to repot into a medium that is more water retentive, I water about twice a week and its not working too so Im going to repot and see how that works for me!
I hope other members can provide you with better advice!
I have two Zygo's and I keep them up on a top shelf in the GH and treat them like Catt's except I do provide them more water than the Catt's. They like to be kept moist with some drying between watering....some of what you are experiencing may be old psudobulbs dying and maybe you have some new growth starting??????
I grow my zygopetlums the same way I grow my cymbidiums ,standing in a tray of water. They must never dry out . I use coconut husk chips as the media. You can wet the leaves but they must be dry by nightfall especially if you have a big difference between the day/night temperatures in your area.It is also important to have the correct feeding program for these plants , get it right and you will have multiple spikes per bulb. watch out for red spider mite as I believe that they are one of the causes of leaf spotting. Hope this helps you. They are wonderful plants to grow even if only for their amazing perfume
Ive got about 12 Zygos currently. I grow all of mine under bright lights (about same as Cattleya like Des said). Don't mist. They have sensative foliage and are prone to fungal issues on the leaves, and LOVE air movement. They also like higher humidity otherwise the leaves will crinkle as they emerge. Im currently growing mine in either prime agra or a mixture of sphagnum and course bark with some perlite mixed in. Keep evenly moist like a phal but not soggy. And like Des said Zygos HATE spider mites. The leaves will go from off colored to yellow and on the floor in days. If I notice more than a couple yellow leaves in around my Zygos I give them a spray with Bayers Rose and Flower Spray. Just so I can sleep at night.
