Default photosynthesis and uv

My orchids home is in an east facing window. I have 5 phals 2 vandas, 1 cat, 1 paph. 3 den phals. They have mini blinds that i tilt skyward all day. I am interested in getting frosted window film for the window and then keeping the blinds drawn all of the time. On the box it talks about blocking uv light to prevent furnishings from fading. Do plants (orchids) need the uv light to carry out photosynthesis? If I install this stuff will I be starving my children?!

Of course the web page says nothing about uv blocking but its on the box in Home Depot!

As best I remember, UV rays are not used in photosynthesis. I think it is only the visible light wave lengths that are absorbed by the chlorophyll.

I agree, but be aware that anything you put on the window will reduce the amount of transmitted light.

I totally agree. Reducing total light will reduce UV, visible, and infrared - everything is reduced. I think it's probably just marketing. I've seen window screen material marketed as having a shade cloth effect. It probably does, but I'm sure they made the screen to keep out bugs first, then realized they could sell it to more people if they make the shade cloth claim.

Have you thought about just putting the higher light plants in the front and just moving the Phals back a bit? The Cat, Dend, and Vanda can definitely handle some eastern sun, they might even want more. I know Phals can take it too if adjusted slowly.

i was wonderin the same thing and i believe the question of whether or not a plant depends on uv radiation depends on wut kinda plant it is.

Influence of UV-radiation on the photosynthesis and photosynthetic carbon metabolism in high mountainous plants

its an article outlining an experiment dun 2 test that very question

So, if I have 2 reptile lamps, one for the light and heat, and the other one for the UV's, I should use the first one? wow
