Encyclia Fragrans - Orchid Board

Is this orchid an easy grow for a beginner??? I am looking to purchase one...(yes the urge is much too great to resist) although I would like some feedback.

Any info would help this beginner.

Encyclia are intermediate to warm growers. While in active growth during the spring and summer, they require plenty of water. Good humidity levels must be maintained for optimum growth. They require medium shade. Once the seasons growth is completed, in the autumn or winter, dryer conditions can be provided. I have read also that they like cattleya condtions, so with that, if you purchase let it acclimate to your conditions and noting it's general culture should do well.

I agree with EVERYTHING Cheryl just said.

This is a good plant for beginning enthusiasts. Depending on where you grow this (indoors w/lights, outdoors, patio), let the medium dry before watering, keep it in a very free draining medium, these like to be fed regularly and definitely loves humidity and good air flow.

But be forewarned...bring this home and it will be the first of more to follow. You're gonna get hooked!

Encyclia fragrans is a great plant. This is the group now put into either Anacheilium or Prosthechea. You might alo look for E. radiata which is as showy but I think a little easier to grow than fragrans. Encyclia radiata is a Mexican species and I think even more readily available than E. fragrans. It grows just like a Cattleya. My only personal advice is when repotting think a smaller rather than a larger pot - they don't mind being pot bound.
