It took many years to finally grasp quality as opposed to quantity. I now will spend for one what I use to spend for ten. But with that being said...I still can come home with way too much;-)

This. I'd rather buy one great quality cultivar from a boutique grower than 10 plants. This is definitely a way to limit oneself, trust me.
When I first started in 2007, I started growing a little bit of everything, and not many were doing well. I gave away a little more than 1/2 of my collection, threw away some more, and was left with only very few. Now I concentrate on species for the most part. I'm happier and I would like to think the plants are too!
90% of my plants are species. Out of those, mostly Laelia anceps. I have 6 dendrobium species, 3 encyclia species. But, the Cattleya alliance has my heart. I am slooooooooooooowly trying out Cattleya species now.
I'm incredibly picky though. I buy only after doing research. I don't buy NOIDS. I don't buy from big boxes.
At the shows. Sometimes I come home with 15 sometimes none. Depends on what I find there.

I did have over thirty but i have just had a cull of ones that had too much scale insect or have never flowered and weren't looking well. I think I've got twenty five now, but I don't count!
I usually only buy one at a time, unless it's by post then I might get a travelling companion to make sense of the postage costs. At shows I'd rather get one really special plant than buy lots. Although at general flower shows I also want to buy succulents and pelargoniums and Primula Auriculas and dinky alpines ............you get the picture!!

Had about 40 in a 90 gal terrarium, a few on the shelf. A good month ago I finished a 4x9 greenhouse. Now at 186 (databased), a few are my own keikis/divisions, but mostly just stock plants. Mostly minis, 98% species, including odd genera [2 Dreslerella, 2 Schoenorchis, 1 Zygostates, ...] (want to get rid of all hybrids). I try to emphasize diversity. Biggest in a day? I think 40 to 50 to stock up the greenhouse. I know, just a tad crazy.
time trajectory: did terrarium for about 4 years, then built the GH. I think this will keep me occupied for a while.

Hi all. I have more than 100 but less than 200. Don't really know. I buy them for the most part at shows where there is a species group selling plants which are cast off others collections for whatever reason. I have many which have never bloomed or even have a name. I have lots of NOIDS. But when I can coax one of them into bloom, I treasure it. They go on my table or over to my girlfriends house or office. I recently had a C. redglen something or other bloom for the first time. I had to compare the flower with pictures on the net to find out what it was. And my phals are starting to put on new greowths and spikes. By the way can I leave kikies to grow on a plant? I also have a nice C. Hoku Gem freckles blooming. Love it. I grow all in a 10x10 shade house. That's all for now.

1) 297 orchids
2) So far, I have brought home 2 - 3 orchids from orchid shows. Most of my orchid purchases are online this year.
3) Happens within milliseconds.

I can only answer this one way..... I feel I have not nearly enough (just over 100) and I buy way too many at one time.

even this is an old thread, I felt I wanted to share:
1) how many orchids you all have, and if you have too many to count, how big your greenhouse or estimate how many you have.
~150
2)
Then, how many orchids do you usually buy at one time? Say if you go to an orchid show or a nursery, how many do you bring home???
around 3-5 orchids at a time but as I become more and more picky with every day it changes
And
3)How long did it take before you realized you have to have just one more orchid????
normally it's on my way back home from the show
It's good to know I'm not alone, thanks guys!
