I have 249 orchids with another 20 ordered today which will make it 269 sometime next week.
I don't buy orchids at shows as it's usually plants that no one wants anymore. We don't see many vendors coming to shows here and it's usually the old plants that growers don't want anymore. I only buy seedlings from orchid nurseries. I have mostly catt's and paphs but a mix of other things as well.
I am completed addicted and it took me about 12 months to realise. I have big problems!!! And I have no room left to service my problem either.

1) As of today I'm over the 100 mark and still collecting.
2) Usually 2 sometimes 3 rarely none.
3) The first time I walked into the nursery I wanted one of everything. Now I've toned down to one of every of the pluer family (I grow them best I think )

I am at about 1000, with that number having been higher and lower at times. One time it went from 1500 to zero in one night as a result of heater failure. The current breakdown is about equal parts vandaceous, paphs/phrags, phals, oncidium species & intergenerics, encyclias/catts, cymbidiums, and oddball botanicals...maybe a bit heavier on the paphs.
For my own collection I can get any where from 1 to 20 at a time, but like Rob, the business can do more at times. (Having to pot up 1500 Chinese cymbidiums was NO fun.)
My "have to have one more" syndrome hit with the death of the first one I was given, as back then I was convinced that I DON'T kill plants! (HAH!)

I have a number of orchids, I really don't like to count them that way I don't really notice if any don't survive me.
When I go to a show or sale I go with a specific amount of funds, so I pick and choose carefully. On these orchid boards though, you sure can find some beauties others are growing to look for and most of those I purchase on line.
It took me about six months to really start collecting. That was when I found out about Exotic Orchids of Maui and their free shipping offers a couple times a year.

Geese RAY!!! from 1500 to zero in one night! That must have been rough for you. Glad you recovered. You did recover right?

A 20-year collection gone, and much of it was truly collected, or purchased from locals while traveling internationally. But THAT sir, was what forced my hand starting First Rays:
Bought a new heater and alarm system and wrote the cost off on my taxes as a "business expense", not having any idea how to make it a business.
A few months later, having bought a couple of plants and later dividing them, I offered the divisions to others via a text-only web page (didn't even know html at that point), and posted a message on r.g.o Within three hours I had two orders, and that was the beginning.
