Anyone growing Eulophiella roempleriana?

Help! I have been trying to grow this species for the last two years and am having trouble. I have tried it in sphag, large bark, small bark, mixes with rock wool, charcole, bark, and or perlite. When the plant gets to about 8" it turns brown and dies and sometimes a new shoot will start from the runner. The most success has been with straight sphag, letting it almost become dry before watering. Right now I have one in half sphag and half styrofoam. I think the problem is that the roots are staying too wet. Any ideas will be gratefully appreciated.

Good Day:

I live in South Florida and have successfully grown this plant for the past 3 years. A couple of things to note:

1. They are a coastal orchid from Madagascar so they need strong light and lots of air movement.

2. They like wet feet so the spagnum is a good idea...but they will rot without the air circulation and strong light (where you are full sun)

3. The are heavy feeders in the growing season (summer) and like it hot....85-95. During this time....make sure they are moist but not soaked...

4. The can tolerate temps to a low of 50, any lower for any length of time will damage the plants.

Thank you for your input. It would seem that we are the only ones trying to grow these. I have mine under lights in the basement and there are several fans going. I am hoping now that spring is here, they will show more growth.

No many people can grow these.

I have been fascinated in Madagascar flora of the non angraecoid variety....meaning colors other than white.

I just opened some eyes at the Coral Gables Orchid Society show at Fairchild with a blooming plant. I can send you pics via email if you like.

Remember...warm, and strong light is important and air circulation as well. When it warms up there....you may want to move it outside....in a bright location...and aclimatise it to the sun.

This is 7 yrs after your last post. Do you still have your Eulophiella roempleriana? What about Eulophiella elisabethae? Both from Madagascar. We have been looking for these. Would you know where we can get them ? We live in Southwest Florida area. Would appreciate any info on them. Thanks so much.

Hey there.. I happen to know Robert, and like me, he loves unusual orchids; especially species.

I saw his plant a few times and it made me want one! He grew it shallow, in a milk carton, with spaghnum, so it could get soaked, but didn't stay soggy and "water-logged" It was outside, in nearly full sun, and we are in South Florida not far from the coast, so always breezy. I saw his plant the year that it bloomed and he took it in to that show.

Sadly, he lost it not long after that. After years of people begging him for divisions, he finally gave in and divided it. His plant almost immediately pooped out after that. Then one by one, all of the divisions that he gave away petered out and died.

One could assume from this, that much like the Angrecoids, this plant probably hates having its roots disturbed..

Louisiana Orchid Connection has flasks available of a plant from this genus as well.
