Ok I am professing my ignorance here.

I have been reading post on the OB for a while now and i am curious as to why all the interest in the Pedigree and Genealogy of a plant? Is it because you want to see what characteristics were passed on or ?

Thank you for answers I bow before your knowledge

For me personally that is the main reason. I can sorta know if it will be fragrant, if to expect more blooms less, bigger smaller. But there are more reasons which may be of more importance to others.

I think knowing a hybrid's lineage can give you a peek into it's cultural needs if you are having problems growing it ..

Dorothy, what entity records an orchids lineage? How does it work if I wanted to trace one back?

RHS -The Royal Horticulture Society records all the registered hybrid orchids
Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: Registration of Orchids

"If you have the hybrid name or grex - enter it into the blank on this page - Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: The International Orchid Register

If you have the parent's and wish to find if their offspring have a registered name - enter them here - Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: The International Orchid Register

Hint - when entering the hybrid name ( grex ) for that search - I have found that sometimes it doesn't go through and you end up with no results - Best thing is to put in one or two words of the hybrid and leave out the genus and you will get a list of any name containing that word. This helps with genus that have changed - for example - For Lc. Blue Boy - One can enter Blue Boy and will come up with Guarisophleya Blue Boy.
Once you get the parent names of that hybrid .. continue to look up the hybrids until you come to species. The species are the end of the branch of the lineage."

That is from a post from this past thread - There is more info here
- Online search tips?

Thanks. I had been there a long time ago. For some reason I thought they didn't keep a record of their roots, no pun intended.

No - they won't give you the lineage .. that is where the work comes in .. you have to take each hybrid you find and work your way back .. it can get quite complicated when lineages go back 10 or more generations ..
I know of no other way or other references .. I believe Orchidwiz give species percentages to the hybrids they have listed but not their lineage .. you can check with Sue (cb977) for that ..
If anyone else out there knows of a source that lists orchid hybrid lineages .. please let us know

AHA!! LOL thanks anyway. So you get the first generation, then repeat the procedure for each parent till u find the gene you were looking for or hoping for perhaps. Sounds good till there is a better program.

You go until you find the orchid species .. that's the end of the line ..
I don't know about finding any genes .. I have never gotten that detailed nor do I intend to ..
