Oncidium won't grow... dormant?
Default Oncidium won't grow... dormant?

Hi!

I have an oncidium which has been hanging in there for about 6 months (despite much incompetence on my part).

It seems like it might be dormant or something -- definitely isn't growing much if at all in the last few months. It has a flourishing root system and two pseudobulbs. One Pseudobulb has two leaves and a shoot with one leaf beside it, the other pseudobulb has no leaves and I'm not even sure if it's legitimately alive. The second pseudobulb is green but has been around for months without producing anything even remotely like a leaf.

The leaves look great, with the exception of a small cat bite on one of them. The pseudobulbs look shriveled, which I have read is pretty normal. The orchid is sitting on a humidity tray in partial sun and I water it once a week with filtered water and let the water drain through. I have just put a stick into the medium so that I will be able to start more accurately gauging the plant's water needs.

But, is there anything I can do to make my oncidium a little bit... happier? And does this sound like a dormant plant?

Thanks!!
- Tay

I would suggest that your "partial shade" might not be raising your plants happiness level enough.

My onc. types get at least 8 hours of bright shade with some of those getting direct sun for a couple hours or more daily and all have bloomed or produced spikes this year.

It sounds like you have the other needs covered. Try upping the light levels gradually and see what you get. Good luck!
