Try just posting to this post and let us sort it out?

I'm sorry, I don't know why that is happening
If you want to see the list for yourself, just do a search in Orchidboard (you'll see the option in the Forum Menu which runs near the top of any OB page) using the words winter rest and you'll get the page I do

It's probably because you have a cookie set on your computer after you did the search the first time, or it was cached on your machine.
So back to the topic, I don't understand what kind of list you guys were planning on collecting. If it's by genera, then we all know that some genera are too big to generalize to the point of saying all orchids in that genus will need a winters rest. If it's by species, then that will be a huge list. For instance, I have a book on distribution of plants in Vietnam, which in most areas is monsoonal, so one could assume that the majority of the plants in certain areas would be adapted to a winter rest period. There's 900 plants listed. I've seen books for Thailand, and various other countries which are also monsoonal. Then there is the Dendrobium book I mentioned earlier, which covers 1200 plants. I found it much easier to find a few good books than to try to search the internet for every little plant.
Plus winter rest varies depending on the plant. Some just want a little less water. Some dry out for a few days. Some dry out for a few weeks. Some don't want any water until spring. Some don't get any watering to the roots, but are bathed in mist, so still get water that way.
Is that type of information in OrchidWiz?

We're not trying to get together an official list...more of a general list of plants each of us know from personal experience that need some sort of winter rest. My chids are so varied that even the ones that get a winter rest get different variations of a rest
As with everything else in orchids...nothing is written in stone

A general list is what I'm needing. It will at least point me in the right direction this winter. I just don't want to kill any of my babies by watering/not watering them so a "research these further" list would be very helpful.

We'll be working on it and I'm sure a general list will get started.
In the meantime, keep an eye on the threads here...this conversation comes up every year near the end of summer so you'll get some answers along the way

Thanks! I figured I wasn't the only "newbie" that had this question at one time or another.

LOL...it's really not a "newbie" question
Folks, including me, who have hundreds of chids and have been growing for years are still confused by this subject
Thanks goodness for Orchidboard!!!

I'm glad. I don't want to go "Darwin" on them and let them adapt or die.

Okay, after researching the 200+ orchids that I have, (and finding that there is NO good source ) this is what I've found for *my* collection (didn't research any I don't have):
NEEDING WINTER REST:
Ascada
Cattalya
Bulbophyllum
Dendrobium
Dendrochilum
Gongora (withhold fertilizer)
Grammatophyllum
Prosthechea radiate (slight drying)
Stanhopea (withhold fertilizer)
Stenocoryne
Feel free to add y'all
