It's probably worth noting that, while it is often used in sowing media, it's usually left out of replate media and for many orchid species, replating into a media containing coconut water can stunt growth. I have no idea as to whether this would translate to an noticeable affect on orchids out of flask (I suspect probably not).

Just out of interest, some time ago I used diluted low fat coconut milk from a can to water an ailing plant. I can't even remember for sure what it was. I think a Cattleya. It grew an incredible amount of new growths all at once. somthing like 7 or 9 small new growths. It did well for a while but I think it then lacked enough roots or something to support all those new growths and in the end it died. But it was quite amazing and if a person knew how to follow thru with care, it might be a good way to get extra growths. Maybe if I had known about seaweed at the time I could have got more roots going! Hmmmm food (pardon the pun) for thought

Interesting thread - I wouldn't have imagined ANYONE using coconut water to water orchids! Here's my addition:

There is a BIG difference in the composition of coconut water of a green (unripe) coconut and the liquid inside a yellow or grey, dry (ripe) coconut - I am referring to the outer color of the husk around the actual nut. I learned this from some conch divers in Belize some years ago when I was "marooned" on a small reef island and they stopped by to get coconuts for drinking water. The green ones have very good, drinkable water. The ripe ones have "water" that tastes much more like coconut but also has much more fat and other stuff that gives you diarhea if you drink it too much - so probably isn't very good for orchids either. So for that reason I do not suggest watering your plants with liquid from a store-bought coconut that is likely ripe...
