Hwra. Puanani 'Lava Burst' Care?
I have a Lava Burst and it seems dehydrated. I cannot seem to find any clear care instructions. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Abby,
Although not my specialty, I believe your plant would require the same care as any Oncidium.
Some wrinkling of the pseudo bulbs is to be expected, especially on the older bulbs.
I'm sure others will join in with more specific info.

Thanks Al. I have read various things, such as the care of an oncidium and the care of a vanda. The leaves are becoming wrinkly and I don't want to overwater it.

Wrinkled leaves is usually a sign of under-watering..
I believe the term is "pleated".

Hi Abby,
I was given one of these gems as a gift a little more than a year ago, and it is doing quite well..in fact it has a nice spike on it now. I grow mine in a combination of lava rock, charcoal and coconut husk chunks, and water it about every 2 or 3 days. It is kept in 50% sunlight in my shade house. The humidity level is the same as for my vandas. I hope this helps.

Abby,
I'm not an expert but, I know 'crinkled/pleated' leaves = not enough water to the particular bulb with these leaves.... If I see that happening to my oncidiums and IF they have roots on the particular bulb I make sure I water them (spray everyday)..If they don't have roots after...ages - I spray the bottom of bulb with a rooting hormone ..
Hope this helps !

Nenella, when you put rooting hormone on a rootless orchid, how long does it take before it starts to grow roots? Have you used rooting gel? If so, can you tell me how you use it and how effective it is?
Thanks!!

Hi,
I am a few months late but I have finally had success growing them after I killed 2 over the years . Anyway, this year I got one from Trader Joes and it was a good plant. I have seen healthier one. To make the story short, I mounted it. Water every other day, superthrive every week for 3 weeks and mist twice daily, more if the temp is above 85. It had 2 new growth almost maturing and tons of root. I hope this helps. Good luck
