Den question, please - Orchid Board

Hi everyone,
What is this new growth on each of my three Dens? Try not to laugh if I'm wrong, but I thought they were new canes and leaves ??? I was surfing around last night and understood from an article that I was reading that new growth from an old cane is a keiki (sp.???) Did I understand correctly and are these keikis? I have enclosed pics, so if you will please take a look and let me know, I would appreciate it.

Bonjour Vicki,

From the photo's they simply look like new bottom growths to me. Your 'chids are getting bigger due to proper culture.

I agree, they do look like bottom growths. Very healthy looking ones. Your babies are doing great.

Thanks for letting me know what the new growths are. I really felt just a little dumb asking all of you my "grammer-school question", but I guess "we live, we learn" right?!

When it comes to something orchids are doing that you haven't seen before, there is no such thing as a dumb question! Asking about things like this is why we have forums like this - and great people who can answer those questions from experience.

For the record, a keiki is also a new growth - just not from the bottom of the plant. It is when a Den, for example, produces a new cane (growth) from where it would normally produce a flower. Higher up existing canes.

Keiki is the Hawaiian word for 'baby' - which is is pretty appropriate as the new little growth is its own separate plant, in effect... not an extension of the growth of the main plant rhizome.

Great growing! You plant is obviously happy!!

I guess you could say it's somewhat coincidental that you mentioned keikas because I have a question I had planned to ask all of you on the board tonight or next time I'm able to get back online which is partially about keikas.

I'm not keen to Dendros, but I've seen my share of new canes. This is a new cane to be sure.

New canes.....gr8 to hear. I am sooo excited about the new growth. Gee, my Dens must like me afterall.

My new canes thank you for helping me get them there.
