Default new spikes

about a yr ago was given dendrobiums and so kikis the kikis are doing awesome and have taken off. But the problem is planted in clay pots and the roots actually attached to the pot not a problem now but was concerned about when it comes time to repot. I have several different types of orchids. cats, brassias. palen, dendrobiums when the dendrobiums forst started puting out new canes had being use to misting everything but the new canes leaves turned black and died so cut back the watering and dont mist anymore and things seem to be do well. I have only been doing this for a yr so still tons to learn. How long does it take before new canes bloom. They were not in bloom when I got them. Also should I cut off the old canes that lost there leaves or leave them thanks

Hey Skip,

First, don't cut the old 'canes'. Some Dends can bloom on old growth. Some only bloom on old leafless canes. Blooming really depends on the season. Dends may put up new growths throughout the year, but blooms during it's normal season on those growths that are mature enough at the time. A few of my Dends are putting up spikes right now (2 new spikes on an old, previously bloomed growth).

Don't worry too much about roots sticking to the pot. When it comes time to re-pot, a good soaking will soften them up a bit. Plus, it's a good sign that they are actively growing.

Lastly, misting isn't really an efficient way to increase humidity. It only lasts a few minutes. When I water, I drench everything, then let it dry out almost all the way before drenching it again. Constant wetness can lead to rot. If you need to boost humidity, try a tray of pebbles with a little water in the bottom. No wet feet but lots of evaporation.

Good Luck, and Welcome!

Royal pretty well summed it up except I would add that a really skinny bladded knife can be run around the inside of the pot to sort of lossen up the roots. You will loose some, but shouldn't be a problem in the long run.

Clay pots are very inexpensive so to prevent less damage to roots, I soak the roots well in a bucket of water then crack the pot in several places with a hammer. This will enable you to peel away the pot with little damage to the roots.
