Dend' Keiki & blooms - Orchid Board

For some reason the images were there then gone. I'll edit, correctly (hopefully) and do a "bump". Thank you for your patience.

Hi All,
My Dend' seems to like San Diego.

It is blooming and there is a "Keiki", I believe growing off of one of those canes.

I'm pretty sure this has been asked many times, but I need to be told, "Peter, now this is what you do".

Appreciate any help. Someone dropped by today and said why don't you bring it inside now since it blooming. I said I think it likes it where it is and you can see it through the glass doors.
Should I bring it inside or just let it be.

I should say I've read some posts on this board and the way "I" see it is, leave it until the roots are at least 3 inches long. Even wait for it to bloom? Then cut it off with a sterile sharp knife/scissors. Oh, will the other cane die? Then plant it in a small sized pot. That's it.

I believe the cane in this 2nd image has a Keiki.

This image was taken awhile ago.
The cane now has 4 roots a couple of leafs and a short stem/cane.
The roots are very thin, but are starting to grow into the pots soil.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Sorry i can´t really offer you any advice, i just want to ask you if you know the exact type your dendrobium is because i think it´s exactly the one i have but i can´t id mine. Thanx.

Sorry, but I had to ask here just to find out what type of PLANT it was. Someone came to my house and said "that's an orchid", I thought it was some type of cane/sugar cane plant.
I had asked here and then I was told it was a dendrobium, and I don't know beyond that.

Place a photo of yours in here and someone might offer you the wisdom of many years of treating orchids.

This is the bottom half of this dend', that might be like yours, if so then I imagine someone here will help both of us out as to it's exact name, or there about.

Hey Peter,

Here's what you should do:

1. Leave it where it is, it does seem happy. If it should rain, bring it in to avoid damage to the flowers.

2. The keiki looks good, leave it too. Your interpretation of when to take it off is fine. The longer it stays, the better it will do once removed. When you remove it, you can probably just twist it off - no need to cut.

3. Go get some new potting media. It looks like it's currently in a soil mix - this is bad. You'll want something that allows air to get to the roots. Once the blooms fall, repot it. Fresh media will need more frequent watering for a while, but it should make it happy.

I have 3 orchids outside getting natural light not direct sun because their under cover (patio roof) but I have a secret as to why they are doing so well. I'll post a photo.

I'll do the potting of the keiki soon.
