If it lays any eggs Swamper, you'll be the first to know. By the way, it has a great spike with 10 buds! maybe it'll make it to judging this time around...

OK, I do have a question! If a grex is A x B = C, and C is crossed back to, say, A - is that a new grex?

Many thanks in advance!

Yes.

(A x B) x A - new grex #1
(A x B) x B - new grex #2

Question

I hope I'm on the correct thread for my question...I have wanted to understand the meaning of information on the tags of the 3 chids that I have that are not noids!...so if someone could help me make sense of it all, I would so appreciative:

my first Orchid, a Phal..Mother's Day gift came from a local nursery: the tag reads:

0516-LP22/01 Pink Blush
06/06/06-03/16/07
P. Sylvias Dream

my first Den, purchased from HD: the tag reads:

wk-50-07
TB. 1386
Den. CANA

and, 2nd Den, purchased as a rescue mission from HD:
tag reads:

wk-42-07
TCS-1044
Den. M.C.

Trying to understand all the information I read here regarding Hybrids, Species etc, I wondered if these particular chids are hybrids.. Please help!... and thank you, Eileen (a new orchid mom)

The first one is Phal Sylvia's Dream -
I didn't find it registered with the Royal Horticulture Society, though ..
0516-LP22/01 Pink Blush is the number and color given by the grower .. probably for categorizing his inventory
06/06/06-03/16/07 not sure what this date means .. could be potting date? or separated from compot
--------------------
wk-50-07
TB. 1386
Den. CANA -
--------------------
wk-42-07
TCS-1044
Den. M.C.
-------
These others have just too little info to figure out for me .. do you know the vendor they got them from ?

Thanks so much Dorothy... I have no idea where Home Depot gets their orchids..both Dens are from there. I thought perhaps the "wk -50-07" and "42-07" might be the day they became...seedlings? kind of a birth date? the rest...can't guess unless as you suggested with the Phal, it might be someone's inventory #.. so if Sylvias Dream is not registered, does that mean someone "created" it by crossing 2 others and then gave it a "private" name? and would that make it a hybrid, or do the hybrids need to be registered? I skipped any science class I could all those years ago in school...so understanding the stages of propagation is ..well, not easy..I am grateful for you searching for me..thank you..Eileen

Possibly

It's still a hybrid, it's just not registered with the RHS (Royal Horticulture Society)

Im not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if a hybrid (crossing 2 others to make a new one with a private name) needs to be registered to be considered a hybrid? Im pretty sure the answer is no. I am also pretty sure there are many beautiful hybrids which may not have yet even been seen a judges.
