Hmmmm....good question. I have a Phal equestris var aurea that was gifted to me and it has a ton of basal keikis...my Mom has an Orchid World that makes basal keikis like crazy. None of my other Phals wants to do that one their own though. I have a bit of keiki paste; maybe I should try it and see.

I tried this keiki paste on the stalk. And I didn't like it. The bud began to swollen, but the phal was very unhappy and dried the stalk with the swollen bud. May be I was unlucky and I should try once more.

By the way, how are you going to find basal bud? Are you going to take off a leaf?

Hi y'all,

Basal keikis are not as difficult as you might think. The trick is timing. I use the liquid concentrate KeikiPro to grow them, and have had real good success. The key as I said or trick is to treat the plant when it is done blooming, AND has begun a new growth cycle. In other words when you see a new lead leaf starting to 'grow'.......(not just present) and perhaps you will see new roots will start to grow as well, that is the time to try and grow basal keikis. You do not need to wound or damage the plant in any way.......steer clear of that line of thought please! KeikiPro can be mixed with water at the rate of 2 drops per ounce of water, and then simply sprayed on the growth stem of the plant. That is what I do to get basal keikis started. Hope all this helps,

gands
