Default Blooming question

Hi all, just wondering how long it takes for the plants to start blooming. That didn't make sense, I guess how old does a plant have to be for it to bloom. My sil who also has orchids mentioned to me one of hers won't bloom until it's 5 years old. I was just curious about that. Thanks!

While the specific genetics of a particular species or hybrid will play a role, cultural conditions play a huge role, as well.

For example, if I take phals out of flask, it will likely take me 4 or 5 years for the majority of them to come into bloom. If, on the other hand, I can isolate them, elevate the temperatures, humidity and feeding program, I can raise them to maturity in as little as 12 months, then cool them down to get spikes.

On the genetic side, don't buy a Paph. sanderianum seedling if you're over 40, as you may never see it bloom!

Yes, as Ray said, it really depends on your culture, and what species you are referring to. If my memory is correct, I have heard stories of miniature dendrobiums blooming in flask! Disa can mature and bloom 1 year after deflasking. Phals, as Ray said, can bloom within a year if you really give them the environment they like. Paphs can bloom anywhere from 2-3 years or up to 20.. if they bloom at all!
