Question What should i do with this?

I have this orchid for about five months. I assume it's odontoglossum???

When i got it it was blooming very beautiful. Now it has lost all its flowers, but look at those roots!!!
They are almost bursting out of the plastic container, and there is no visible medium left. I didn't want to repot it when i got it because it was blooming.

The container is feeling very hard so it's necesary to repot i presume, but should i rip the plant in two?
There are six bulbs, and the plant is starting to form two new (ehm.. how do i say that in english??) baby's?

Wow!!! Sorry I can't help you but I'm just marveling at how big that plant is and how small that pot is!

I love the size of that thing it looks huge and healthy. Splitting it in two? Unless you don't like huge showy orchids why not leave it alone, other than repotting. I'm sure you'll get more experienced responses here in a minute, but I think it's a matter of preference.

While it looks very health and these guys put out lots of roots like this, so the pot doesn't fall over from the uneven weight and to protect the roots and maybe just for looks, I'd repot in a slightly larger pot and carefully tuck in the roots....soaking them 1st softens them and makes things easier

Welcome to the OB. and Nice plant, I would repot with fresh mix and not to big of a pot. These like to be somewhat root bound. Or you could mount it. As Swamper said you could divide it but that would mean that you have 2 small plant rather then one big one. I vote for the big one. Good luck

Okay, you're right. Actually it's a lovely plant like it is, so i will just repotting it.

What kind of medium should be used for this type of orchid? Is it fine bark?

And is it an odontoglossum like i think?

Thanks for the answers!

My guess is that it's an odontocidium, suggesting it will like warmer conditions than a "pure" odontoglossum.

Selection of potting medium is determined as much by your growing conditions and watering habits as by the plant.

I would choose something fairly airy, so fine bark might be a bit too compact.
