Hi. I just bought a Brassavola Hybrid that was in a package. I'm confused about how they say to transfer it and mist it until new root growth appears. Am I suppose to mist the leaves? Because I thought water should be kept off the leaves to prevent disease.

Thank you very much.

You say it was in a package,I assume this is not a pot,if so you will need to repot it into a pot that will only take 1or2 years growth, you will need to get potting media, bark is one of the best and place a layer in the bottom then gently ease the plant into the pot while softly pushing the barh around the roots until the pot is full. It pays to soak the potting mix in water for a day or two.If it is hot misting the plant is ok but not a night and around the roots is best, use a weak orchid food mix after potting leave for a week, check to see if the potting mix is not drying out to quick, water twice a week in summer reducing the water as the cooler weather arrives, get some books on orchids and study them, Brassavolvas are cool growing in New Zealand and must have air circulation as all orchids do. Cheers

Thank you Masda.

I repotted it in a 4" clay orchid pot and sprayed the roots with a spray bottle that has some Shultz Orchid feed in it that I use on my Vanda.

Than placed it in an area where the light isn't too bright because the instructions on the potting bark said that.

Will it be okay to mist them with the fertilizer or should I use just water?

Thanks again!

Do not mist the plant. The idea behind misting is to humidify the air, not to wet the plant.

I recommend giving the potting medium a good soaking, then keep the plant warm and in subdued light (sounds like you are already there) for a few weeks until you see some growth activity. Then move it to brighter conditions.
