Default Vanda Tan Chay Yan

Hello everyone.

I'm new here. I wanna learn more about Orchids. Don't know much about it.
I'm Majoring in Biotechnology in local University and currently doing micropropagation of Orchid as my final year project.

I need help from a pro or advise on certain Orchids sp.
I just bought hybrid sp. of Dendrobium with pod. (It is almost matured, waiting now before I could culture the seeds)

I have my readily available of cattleya hybrid seeds with me right now. I haven't yet put them under sterile condition because my lab is unavailable yet.

by the way, my supervisor just asked me to find Vanda Tan Chay Yan for my assignment. I found a few of Vandas but not Vanda Tan Chay Yan. I've googled about V.Tan Cahy Yan but has limited information. Wanted to buy any related books. Anyone? If u are from Borneo and u know where I can get the Vanda Tan Chay Yan, can u tell me soon? thanks

Any information about Dendrobium Genting, Cattleya hybrid, and Vanda Tan Chay Yan, pls let me know.
Thanks

Hi Bella

For more background info on the V. TCY you might want to refer to a Singapore-based orchid forum at GreenCultureSingapore.

From what I read, V. TCY is a really old hybrid that first came out in the late 1960s in Malaya, and from all accounts, it's very hard to come by nowadays in Singapore. Not sure if you will have any better luck in Malaysia - perhaps easier for you since there should be some very old nurseries that still might have a few pots somewhere.

As for Den. Genting, this might sound silly but you might want to look at this nursery: Welcome to Genting Orchids. Their website has quite a few hybrids and they may be able to help you out.

Good luck in your project!

Hello Chubidubi, Baloney & Swamper,
Thanks for the reply ya & wishes. Really appreciate it.

I've sent my Cattleya exposed seed to lab (to be kept) and I kept my Dendrobium Genting (with only pod) at my house for a moment. But i will bring the pod to lab and culture them soon.

I'm going to prepare my media. I have four particular media in mind. MS, Vacin and Went (VW), Knudson c, and mitra.
I've learnt abt MS and I prepared them last semester to culture corn embryo, tomato seeds, carrot seeds, and garlic meristem but never for Orchid.

So anyone might help me with the specific ingredient of MS, VM, Knudson c and Mitra? Especially for Dendrobium sp., Vanda, and Cattleya. Well, I do have information about it but I need something practical. Maybe any of you has special info which is more reliable, inexpensive, easy to prepare and most important productive

Next week, I'm going to the area near Mount Kinabalu (which is two hours ride from my place) to find my Endemic Orchid. Hopefully, I can find them. I'll buy Dendrobium sp. again, bulbophyllum sp., or paphiopedilum. I still want Vanda Tan Chay Yan though. But I don't think its available there. I'll try to find them.

Default my Vanda

I got few endemic pods with me today and I'm going to culture them soon. Dendrobium parthenium and Cymbidium bicolor. and I have this big pod from Dendrobium sp. Not sure about the exact species. The seller also not sure.

I bought Vanda sp. too and of course it is not Vanda Tan Chay Yan. It is Vanda lamellate. however there is no flower and pod. Only leaves. I guess I'll try to meristem

I have Vanda Tan Chay Yan.SBG 770(original) Unfortunately, it is not for sale. Your supervisor is making you running for him or her. This is very bad.
I also do not wish to merclone my plant. As with most old timer.
