Bud Blast Question
Default Bud Blast Question

Hey there,

I recently purchased a phalaenopsis orchid about week ago. I have about 13 bud blassted already (not sure if these are the correct terms, so sorry!). Once the bud blasted, will there still be flower growing from that spot or will it be gone forever ?

Hi Sam,
I think once they blast, they will be gone from that area. I'm not sure why that happens, but sometimes it's because it's not getting enough water during growth.
I had a white phal blast a whole stem of buds and then a new stem grew and the buds all bloomed perfectly. You just never know!

I am not a veteran grower but I have never had a phal let alone other orchids rebloom in a previously blasted stem. Treat your phal like any other phal in your collection and should easily rebloom again. It's not uncommon for phals to bloom twice a year. Give you a or 2 to bring it around a 2nd time.

Take a walk to the Welcome Thread "Break the Ice" and give yourself an intro to our members, give us a heads up to your collection and don't forget we love s.

sometimes when you buy a new orchid in spike the stress alone is enough to cause a blast, and phals are known for it. some need time to acclimate to your growing conditions. did you buy it from someone who spiked it in they're greenhouse or was it a "flipper" like the grocery stores that will buy in a ton and turn them around and sell them right off. don't give up hope. stick with it and im sure you can rebloom it!

also remember that you shouldnt turn them when in bud. leave them so the light is always facing the same side until the buds open. i had a professional grower once tell me they can handle getting turned two or three times, but after that buds will drop on ya. so i place all my tags in back of the pot so i always know that i put it back the same way when im done watering. just a tip

good luck and welcome aboard!

I would add these:
Temperature stress - exposure to cold or drafts, excessive high temps.
Water stress - letting get too dry.
Pollution stress - exposure to byproducts of combustion.

Depending on where you purchased the plant some of these stresses may have already occurred before you brought it home.

I have had buds blast and flowers collapse on phals in my kitchen bay window after using Pam or other cooking sprays in the close vicinity.

Blasted buds wither, dry up and fail to open. With your good care your plant will acclimatize to your conditions and will bloom again.
