What is quarter terete?? Male
Default What is quarter terete??

Hi all

Apologies in advance for the noob question, but since I picked up the orchid bug a few months ago, I've been trying to read up as much as I can on them. What puzzles me though is in relation to Vandas - I read that there are 3 main leaf forms:

- strap leaf
- terete leaf
- semi terete leaf

The first two are clear to me, but what in the world does semi terete look like?

Would any kind soul care to enlighten me by perhaps posting a semi terete leaf picture up here please? Many thanks in advance!

Number one as you know the leaf is pretty open
Number two as you also know, the leaf looks like a pencil
Number 3 which you say you don't know is almost closed (the leaf I mean)
I just happen to be reading a book on it called Vandas and Ascocendas by David Grove. Great book. Im at work and the book is home, so I hope I got that right

Basically, I believe there are two types - strap and terete. The others semi- and quarter-terete are hybrids of the two.

As a terete-leaved plant will typically take very high light levels, the descriptor will help you decide if they are right for your conditions.

Baloney
these types of Vandas are used for landsaping in tropical areas - which includes Singapore. They are normally JVB crossed with a strap leafed Vanda. The Sing.Botanic Gardens, Mandai near the Zoo ( correct spelling ? ) & the tropical Gardens on Sentosa would have representatives of these. We grow ours either in full sun or under 50% in Bangkok

JVB is the initials of "Josephine Van Bruno ( check spelling ) this is a very old hybrid & from memory has a whitish flower. Hybridist's have been using JVB & crossing it with larger strap leaf Vanda's to get various colours - I think all of ours have finished flowering. The ones we have range from orange to purple. If you get time check the places I mentioned as I am sure they would have some in their collections
