I grow all my Phals in sphagnum and a good trick I learned when I first started out with moss was to let it get dry and crunchy in between waters. Water it thoroughly and let it dry out again. You may want to invest in a very narrow tipped watering can. It will help to avoid getting water in the crown.

Thanks, horsechick, I have started using an old (clean) turkey baster to water my phal.

No it can't be fungus, b/c only one side of the leaf has turned yellow and not the entire leaf is affect. It has transplant spot which indicates sun burn too me. The area that you had you Phal in does partial sun shine in that area? If it had fungus why didn't it affect that entire leaf and other parts of the plant has well?:scratchhead:

:hmm: I've actually burned a few leaves like this on a few of my phals from being too close to the heated fan this winter. Looked just like this. Just on one side of each phal on just one leaf each! ;) I just trimmed each yellowing part and took a q-tip with cinnamon. Hasn't spread to the rest of the plant cuz I knew the cause, although the affected leaves on each plant looks weird.

:waving Hey Nickle! I'm in So Fla too. I have to say, I have trimmed a lot of phal spikes and I have never seen one ooze anything. :scratchhead: That is odd. I have seen half yellow leaves. Think of it this way: it still has half a good leaf. I wouldn't cut it off unless it gets mushy, black, moldy, etc. Sometimes this could be due to an injury. Is the leaf partially torn away at the base? Still what concerns me most about this plant is the lack of new growth. With leaves that big there should be additional growth from the crown. I see no evidence of crown rot but this plant is not thriving. What I am going to tell you now is just my :twocents: worth. It may be hard for you to grow a phal in moss and a plastic pot in our humid conditions. To me the easiest way to grow a phal down here is in a chunky bark mix in a wood basket or clay pot. If you decide to repot, that is an option. :goodluck:

Susiep, I have though about repotting...since it's not showing signs of new growth. But I'm moving in a couple of weeks (from north fl to south fl) so do you think I should probably wait until after the move?

susiep 06-23-2008 09:34 PM

I'm not sure about that, but I guess would hold off on the repotting until after the move. Other opinions?

Horsechick, when you say you water when the sphag is dry and crunchy, do you mean dry and crunchy all the way through to the bottom or when the top is dry and crunchy?

Thanks!

Repott is in order

Go ahead with repotting your Phal in new medium and either plastic pot with open side slats, aircone pot or teak basket (whatever your preference). If you're going to use Phal. bark mix. I suggest soaking (24 hrs) it in hot water to open up the poars of the bark. Also to encourage growth, cut the spike back to the base and put cinnamon on it too prevent any infection.

Water it every twice a week and fertilize weakly, weekly.:goodluck: on getting your baby to bounce back.
