Default ughhh how come this always happens?!

hi

so I buy an orchid with healthy roots, water it as it it supposed to be watered, and 2-3 weeks later, the roots are rotting/ falling off.

But... then the new roots that grow seem to be fine. This happened with my two miltoniopsis and odontocidium.

This is annoying because it is a set back (the plants now won't bloom this year since the plant has to regrow the root system instead of focusing on flowers.

but worst of all, it is not encouraging to think that you are killing your orchids.

Is there a reason for this?

I checked two of my new oncidium-type plants dontocidium Tiger Crow and Sanderera Black Star. The Tiger crow seemed okayish, but the pseudobulbs on the sanderara seemed more krinkled than when I bought it. The roots werent all black and rotten, but they were starting to look browner, and some of the roots slid off from the hard stringy center of the root.

THanks

The watering/drying cycle - which helps determine the "breathability" of the medium has changed between the original environment and yours.

The new roots are tailored to your environment, unlike the others.

Yeah it happens with me too, you just have to give them time and take into account that the plants will be trying to adjust to your environment.

Sure they might be off by a few months in flowering the next time, but they would have gotten accustomed to your place

So you loose most/all the roots on the plants?

Well if this happens to a lot of people, then I should be okay.

Thanks!!!

It happens to me all the time! I realize that a lot of my plants bloom "off schedule" but that's fine with me...they all have their own brand new customized root system for their new home

Some of mine do that and some not , also seems to depend on where they came from , Fl. to Mo. aka Misery is a bigger culture shock then from Ill. to Misery .Might be a temperature related thing? ... You are not alone .. Gin

When you joined Orchidboard and began asking questions, you automatically became a good orchid grower, you no longer have the chance to be a bad one
