Thanks for posting this question. I have noticed the same thing, especialy the aerial roots. And I wouldn't have even tried to grow orchids had not been for the OB.

yeah, that is happening to my oncidium sharry baby, well the old aerial roots anyways. Its annoying because the plant looks unhealthy on the surface, but the roots seem fine underneath.

Its strange that more people don't disucuss the root dying thing-- it seems that a lot of people have the problem, and is quite discouraging!!!

Must happen more frequently than any of us have discussed. Just today repotted a few into aliflor, yeppers the same thing. The most puzzling is the ones that shoot legs off old stringy roots, hate to disturb those but when you cut the root back to the plant and it's not fresh by any means but can still produce an off-spring root ... orchids never cease to amaze me

Yeah, this happens to some of my plants also. So what do you do? Just trim back to the new root growth and leave the rather sad (unhealthy?) root above it, or cut off the whole thing? In the case of rescues, you don't always have a whole lot of useable roots to start with.
