Default Dendrobium canes

Today I got 2 dend. canes from a friend of mine. I soaked sphag in a root stimulant, drained and dipped the cane in stimulant powder and placed in a zip lock bag. Is this going to work or is there a different and more effective way to produce roots. The cane on the left is a Dend. Jade, right Dend. Thongchai 'Lai'.

Caroline,

I believe you can buy this powder at Wal-Mart, KMart, or a local garden center... I personally have had no luck with it for Dendrobium canes, but it does seem to work great for Oncidiinae genera back bulbs...

Sphag is short for Sphagnum moss... it is a moss that is commonly used with orchids, but sometimes it will rot the roots off. I believe this moss, along with some other mosses, converts the alkalines in soil to acids (which is good for bog orchid genera, like Calypso, Pogonia, Calopogon, Cypripedium, and others)... Sphagnum moss is also good for Stanhopiinae genera, like Stanhopea, Gongora, and Coryanthes, where the acid from ants (I think it is Folic Acid) in nature, is basically reproduced with Sphagnum moss. Correct me if I am wrong on this...

From what I understand, the canes don't actually make new roots and grow, they throw keikis and then the old cane dies off.

Sphagnum moss (good sphagnum, anyway) also has antiseptic properties. It was actually used as a wound dressing before modern antibiotics.

It is a great thing for small orchids of any description, and most orchids do very well in sphagnum. Only real problem with sphagnum moss is that it goes from good to bad in about 30 microseconds. Usually after about a year. When it breaks down, it is not at all good for orchids. If you use very clean water and minimal fertilizer, the sphagnum will last longer.

I have new growths from the canes (den). First I thought they were spikes, unfortunately they are not.
Will attach pictures later.
