When I repot I always poke a skewer inside toward the side of the pot and leave it there. I use clear pots so I can see where the roots are. When I think its time to water my chids I pull out the skewer and feel it for dampness or dryness and back into the side of the pot it goes. I only water when it is bone dry. I do like Dorothy does and brake the skewers down so they aren't too tall. I also put those cute little dragon fly clips on the skewer so I can see it better and not poke out my eyeballs.

I like it pretty simple ... I keep my ID tags very close to the sides on the pots and stick my skewers right in front of them, so after checking for moisture I just put it back in the same place - just don't keep moving your tags around, LOL!
