Cut the spike to promote root growth? Female
Default Cut the spike to promote root growth?

If this orchid lives a long, healthy life, it will have very little to do with me and everything to do with you guys! When I repotted my phal, I had to cut about 80% of the roots due to root rot. It still has three or four nice healthy roots, and the plant appears to be doing wonderfully, but that's a lot of roots to have to grow back! Should I cut the two still-flowering spikes to help it along? I appreciate all your help!

If it were my plant, i would cut the spikes to allow the plant to focus on growing itself.

I agree. If it were mine, and if I had cut that much off the roots, I would dump the flower spikes for new roots. You will see the plant respond soon with new roots and new root shoots off the old roots as long as it doesn't have to deal with flowers. Just my 2 cents.

Been there, done that. I would cut the flowering spikes, the blooms will last as long and your 'chid will be able to focus on re-growing roots

good luck!

Gotta go along with the others. A lot of plant energy goes into growing and maintaining flower spikes, and if that energy is needed elsewhere but isn't sent there the plant will suffer. I would cut the spikes now, allow the plant to refocus on roots, and in the near future you'll get more wonderful flowers!

It drives me nuts that I won't be able to physically see if the roots are growing or not, since the pot isn't clear.
