for me all the tips given above are complementary to rfertilizer, as they do not cover all plant needs, or are like in the case of the baby pill or strogen in women's urine just a hormone/hormone like supplement.

As for sugar, I still do not see the point of giving sugar to plants (even though I know it is a common praxis and many hobbyist put their hands in the fire for it!). Ray do you have other information than me regarding plants ability to absor sugar? what I remember from my plant physiology lectures was that they could not, but maybe I am just forgetting something as it looooong ago

I tried the rusty nails on my African Violets and honestly never saw a difference.
The sugar...I use a dab of it in water if I have a sickly plant and I swear that it helps. That is why I use wine corks instead of peanuts for my orchids.

In my grandparents house, in the Dominican Republic, we still have an outhouse (it's in the countryside), although we just built a manual bathroom (there's no plumbing system in that area). When it was time to seal the hole (for the obvious reasons) they would plant a fruit tree on the spot the outhouse was in. The trees would grow really fast and big, and the fruits were DELICIOUS!! I know some people will probably get nauseous thinking about that, but it's true.

I think the sugar thing applies more to fruiting plants than it does flowering plants. Plants require an increased amount of carbohydrates during fruit production. In essence, an orchid seed pod could be considered the fruit, so it must apply a little for flowering plants, too....I would think.
