Sediera japonica is a cool to intermediate grower. It can take it down as low as 36 degrees F (I don't recommend extended periods of that low of a temperature).

This plant likes shade.

I used to grow hydroponically using Aussie Gold. In three years, from one plant I had three or four. They produced mulitple spikes.

It's a very hardy plant. I grew it outdoors here in Southern California.

I was taking some pictures of other orchids so I thought I would take a few of my Sedirea to try and show what is going on, but the pictures aren't the best. I am trying to keep in moist and not let it dry out, but I have also seen some white fuzzy fungus stuff starting to grow on a few of the roots. So far, things are the same.

1. Unless the root mass is as large as that pot, it's way overpotted.

2. If that's potted completely in moss remove it and use large wood chips and cover the top in moss.

3. Allow the plant to dry out completely between waterings.

4. Grow in a place with good circulation.

5. Like I said it grows cool to intermediate. Try growing outdoors until it gets too cold, then bring it in.

6. Give it time.

I have my Sdr. japonica in my vivarium in a corner where it gets shade. Every thing I've read since we started the project was that they like to stay moist. I water/mist mine 3 to 5 times per week and let it dry only slightly between. It hasn't put any new growth but I haven't lost anything from it either.

I'm sorry you're having the problems, Becca

I have had mine for almost a year. For the first nine months I kept it in lower light, small pot, chc mix, watered weekly. It put out a few new roots in that time period but really didn't do anything else. About 3 months ago I moved to a brighter spot on the shelf and it immediately threw out a new leaf and loads of new roots. My guess is these should be grown brighter than you think. Mine hasn't bloomed yet but it's still just a baby.

As cool as those moss balls look I think they could be very challenging to grow anything well in them.

You're probably right about the light, Terri. I hadn't thought about that. I think I'll move mine higher up in the vivarium and take some notes.

The root mass fills the pot up pretty well, but not completely. I put the medium sized cork chunks in the bottom for drainage as I was afraid of rotting the roots, but the roots, like I said before, seem healthy, minus the mold that I just found growing on it. Can these stand a breeze growing on them? Perhaps that would help with that issue. I can't grow this outdoors, it will soon be in the high 90's here with little humidity, I don't think it would like that so well, plus I don't have a spot that the squirrels couldn't get it as well.

Becca, aside from the issue with squirrels, I think your Sedirea japonica can withstand the 90 degree F heat. It can get well over a hundred degrees F here during the summers. The cooler summers are around the low to mid 90's.

Breeze is good.

Low humidity not so good. Keep around 60% - 70%.

Bright shade or indirect bright light is the preferrence.
