it was just my two cents I do not know in the states, but collecting orchids (even under the described conditions) in europe, could bring you a lot of troubles too... I would suggest you contact your local Orchids society, as they can inform you how to obtain the corresponding permit to collect and save those plants without being in conflict with the regulatory agencies...
