Default Had to repot my Phal, rotting roots.

Ok, so i recently bought my first phal. There's pics of it in gallery from when i first bought it. There's also pics in there of when i repotted it today. The greenhouse that raised this phal had PACKED the moss very tightly into the root structure. And though the plant looked healthy when i bought it, it was in a green pot and i couldn't see the roots.

-Reminder to myself now to only buy orchids in clear pots!-

Now i decided to repot early (as it hadn't lost it's flowering stalk thing yet) because it had lost all of it's flowers and has lost a few leaves. It was a good thing i did. I was shocked to see how tightly packed it was. The roots are nearly all rotted, only a little bit of green left near the base of the plant. The leaves still look ok and the Keiki it has started still seems to be doing ok.

I did repot in moss again, but with lots of room to breath and with stones at the bottom to allow for drainage. The pictures i have up here are what i left of the roots for i fear cutting ALL of them will kill it.

Opinions on whether you think it's going to make it or not would be greatly appreciated, lol.

First of all cut off the 2 flower spikes that it looks like are on the plant. (Remove all the way to the base of the plant) Seeing that you re potted back into moss you will really have to watch your watering. The plant should grow new roots for you but it could take some time. Don't expect the plant to bloom for you next year unless you get some good root growth.

Yeah, i think that spike is done anyways, so i can cut that. The other spike you mention is the Keiki and would rather not cut it off if possible. =(

Thanks for the tips =)

If the kieki has a total of 4 inches of root growth it can be cut off and potted up on its own. That could mean only 1 root 4 inches long or 4 roots 1 inch long

No root growth yet, which i thought was odd. It's just shooting up outta the base plant. But it has a leaf...lol.

If you leave the spike with the Keiki on you risk losing both plants. If you cut off the spike with the Keiki, then at least you have a shot at saving the mother plant. If it were my plant I would Sphag-n-Bag that puppy.
