What Can I Grow? Male
Default What Can I Grow?

Hello, I have moved to Jackson, Wyoming and I have no idea what I will be able to grow here. I
have no designated orchid room so artificial light is out as well as high humidity. My space is also very limited. Large windows with South East exposure. I
am thinking I will have to go with miniature varities but don't know anything about them. My experience is with
Phrags. Phals. Cats. and others all grown under lights and when the season permitted, outdoors in Maryland. Anyone have a good book or two to suggest for research? Thanks Marc

There is a book review section here on the board.
Look to the left of this screen and find the 'Site Menu'
then click on book review .. and you will get a list of books - when you click on the highlighted title, you can view a review of that book.
or just click here - http://www.orchidboard.com/bookreview
Here is also a book list thread - Book list
and another past thread - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...chid-book.html
This should keep you busy as you wait for others to respond with their favorites.

Hmm, are you looking for something that could grow in a windowsil? Or something that could grow outside?

Also as an idea talk to someone in a Wyoming Orchid Society who can help you with the conditions and what people generally grow there.

Also, if you're growing inside, whether under lights or at windowsill, you could get a humidifier to raise the humidity some.
(It's good for humans too!)

In terms of minis, here's a thread I posted awhile back:
Suggestions for beginner interm-warm minis?

Thank you for your suggestions. I think I may go the terrarium route. Thanks again and please keep the suggestions coming. Marc

Start with some nice Phals. They give lovely blooms and are as forgiving as any orchid can be.

Regarding books, take a look at the lists and then see which you can get from your local library (yeah, I'm a librarian). If they don't have one you really want ask them about doing an Interlibrary Loan (where they borrow the book from another library for you to use).
