Question Need quick orchid basics

Greetings to all----

Newbie here. Purchased an orchid at Orchid Jungle in Homestead, FL----live in Indiana--so needless to say brought my new baby home. (actually two babies!)
I have a Den. Burana Jade (anniversary gift since these were my wedding flowers) b also purchased a "Rhy. gigantea" (????) which is tied to a piece of wood----my concern is that the roots on the Rhy. appear to be drying out.....I have sprayed water on the roots....but it still looks dry.....

Please any help would be appreciated---I don't wish to kill my new baby!

Thank You!
KD

First of all, Don't panic!
Get yourself a cup of tea or coffee, sit back and relax.
I can't give you advise on either of these 2 orchids
Your Den. Burana Jade is a Dendrobium hybrid.
and your Rhy. gigantea is a Rhynchostylis gigantea.
I will post links to past threads on this board and a culture sheet for the Rhynchostylis gigantea .. and give you a little reading while you wait for others to respond.
Here is the culture sheet for Rhy. gigantea - Rhynchostylis gigantea Culture
and these are past threads to introduce you to the plant and members that grow them - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...earchid=183368
Here is the OB's care sheet for dendrobiums - http://www.orchidboard.com/Dendrobiu...ure-Care-Sheet
and the forum on Dendrobiums - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...bium-alliance/ - you can also use the search option to look for specific question on this orchid.
This will help introduce you to your orchids and get a feel for the board ..
I hope this helps
Just be patient and wait for responses.
In the meantime, sit tight and put your reading glasses on
BTW KD
Glad you have come on 'board'

Welcome KD! You will be fine now. Once you read up on your orchids, feel free to ask questions.
I don't have those particular orchids, but many here do.
Happy reading.

Default still Puzzled

Ok So happy to have had some response thus far....however one of the threads fro the Rhy---was taken off the board.....I think now I will be ok with the Den....although it doesnt look like many out there.....

My huge concern right now is the Rhy on driftwood.....roots appear to be drying out/shriveling up.....do I mist them???? I see many using "moss" so I wonder now if I should get some moss for the roots......

I can see this is going to be a terminal illness with me....they are so interesting!
Thank for any and all scoops y'all can provide!

In checking your threads and post .. this is the only one that is shown .. you may have not hit the submit button but the preview button .. You can post a question in the Vanda Forum for the Rhy. gigantea and the Dendro forum for your Burana Jade or the beginner's discussion .. it's up to you
If you need help navigating the board, you can ask here or send me a PM or email through the OB

Hi and welcome to Orchidboard

Dorothy has given you some great direction with your new babies

For the Rhy gigantea, you may have to heavily mist those roots more than once a day.
Both of mine are growing in wooden baskets with nothing else in them...

whatever you do, do not try to move those roots around
This particular plant doesn't like it's roots being disturbed if it can be avoided.

Welcome to OB!

Since mounted plants tend to dry out much more quickly than potted plants you will have to water much more frequently. Lots of folks here who grow mounted plants simply dunk them in a bucket of fertilized water for 20 minutes or so every couple of days. Some plants may need daily dunking. You can loosely wrap some sphag moss around the roots to keep them a little moister.
