Soaked plant in water for too long?
Hi
I repoted one of my phaphs the other day, and the medium seemed to dry out really quickly.
When I watered it yesterday, I decided to let it sit in a pot of water for about half an hour... but I forgot about it, and left it in water for a bit more than 2 hours.
Was that bad for the roots?

I wouldn't think that forgetting it once or twice like that would do any harm, but I am no Paph experts. I do soak most of my plants about once a week. I wouldn't worry too much!

It's probably not that good for the roots if you did it often but I can't imagine that one time would hurt anything. I have accidently done the same thing but for even longer and nothing bad has happened. I'm a bad orchid mommy sometimes!

I have done that before with another type orchid and no harm was done in the long run. I'm not sure about paphs, but just keep an eye on it. Not much else you can do. Growing paphs are not my strengths, but I think they like moist roots over drying out completely.
Most everyone has done this same thing at one point in time. Happens to the best of us. I now use my stove timer for anything I'm soaking and walk away from any length of time.
I'm curious, was your potting medium presoaked 24 hrs. before you repotted? You said it dried out very quickly. Perhaps that was a good thing you soaked it good this time.

kiki- I soaked it for about 5 hours, but I probably should have soaked it longer. I was using a shultz bark mix, but I didn't like it much, so I bought a new bark and coconut husk medium, which should have probably been soaked for 24 hrs.

I think you'll be fine. These orchids are more resilient than we give them credit for.

I recently left a couple of Phrags soaking in a bowl of water for 3 days! I forgot all about them, and I had gone out of town. I normally say good morning to them every day to see what's shakin, and I would have caught it then had I been home. It's been 2 weeks and they seem to be fine. The Jason Fisher is continuing to develop it's bud. I'm a REALLY bad orchid mommy!!
