Mother's Day Orchid...help! Female
Default Mother's Day Orchid...help!

I recieved this beautiful Cymbidium orchid for mother's day & I really have no idea how to take care of it. I've read that they like it a little cooler & not full day sun, but what else do I need to know to ensure that it stays healthy? What do I do when it's done flowering? Do I cut the stalk off or just cut it back? How often should it be fertilized & with what?
As you can tell...I need lots of help! This beautiful orchid is very intimidating. I'm so afraid that I'm going to kill it.

I don't grow a lot of them, but there are a few Cybidium gurus here. They'll have lots of info for you. I would say it's safe to go ahead and cut the flower stalk once all the flowers have dropped. Mine get a LOT of light. Good luck!

I trust this link will be helpful. It is the cultural sheet on Cymbidiums. You can download and print these sheets. There are both warm and cool growing cymb. Most require a cool down in the fall to spike. Once the flowers are spent, remove the old spike at the base, because no flowers will come from that spike unlike a phalaenopsis that can produce more flowers from the old spike. After you look over the AOS culture sheet, let us know if you have other questions...good growing

I am not a cymbid grower either but I can suggest you go through the Cymbidium forum for posts that address your questions - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...dium-alliance/
or scan through the Beginner's Forum or you can enter into the search option 'Cymbidium' and see what you come up with while you wait for others to respond
Here is the OB's Cymbidium Care Sheet also - http://www.orchidboard.com/Cymbidium-Culture-Care-Sheet

Just read as much as you can and ask questions like you have and you won't kill it
