When you start growing ferns, it's an indication that the medium may be staying too wet. The fern itself isn't a problem, but if the medium is broken down, not good for the orchid. When was the last time the orchid was repotted? And what type of orchid? In general, the best time to repot is when new roots are just starting. Some, like Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum, are growing roots prettty much all the time and so they can be repotted any time. Cattleyas and Oncidiums, better to wait for the new roots.
