Default Yellow stalks

Hi! AFter the last flowers on my phal started to wilt, the stalk they were on was starting to turn yellow. The stalk felt woody and there was a hole in the middle. It looks alive still.

What does this mean? I cut the stalk down to 2" high maybe. Is this the right thing to do?

you did right. the stalk finished it,s job and decided to dry up.
you,re phal should now start preparing for a new stalk in the fall when night temps drop.
keep it well watered and fertilized during the nxt few months.

Thank you. I am glad to know that I am doing the right thing at least and understanding orchids a little bit better after I massacred 8 plants.
